I believe a garden is an evolving space, one which we develop to our individual requirements.  If you have watched Gardeners World on BBC TV, you will know Monty Don is changing parts of his garden in Longmeadow, introducing more drought resistant plants.  This is on the assumption we will continue to have warm dry summers.  Monty Don’s two acre garden is huge, compared to most peoples and I therefore understand, keeping everything watered takes a considerable amount of time and appreciate why he would make changes.  However, I do wonder just how much Monty is told to do and cover in his BBC programmes rather than him following what he wants.  I have been making changes to our flower border at the back and I am just embarking on a larger task.  Neither of these have anything to do with going down the drought resistant route.

I had a list of plants that needed moving in the flower border and with a drop in temperature on Saturday, I completed most of these.  I ensured the new hole in the soil was well flooded with water and sprinkled with a dressing of fish, blood and bone, before dropping the freshly lifted plant into its new home.  Currently they are all looking well settled, helped by the last two nights rainfall.

The larger task has been spurred on by the fact, in a few years neither of us may be physically able to maintain this section of our garden.   Hopefully this won’t be the case but better to tackle it now while it is an enjoyable job rather than a struggle or having to pay someone to do it (and hope they do it well).

Since we moved here in 2008 our garden has evolved, according to our needs and I don’t imagine the two changes, I covered above, will be the last.

To round off today’s blog, I have details of the Cricket Club’s Annual Beer Festival.  This will be on the Sports Field over the August Bank Holiday weekend.  Information of what will be available on each of the three days is covered in their poster, below.
