Just when we thought we’d had our last BBQ of the season, thanks to the warm weather, Peter was able to light up on Thursday evening and cook sausages and onions.  I had planned eating something totally different but there was no way we were going to miss the opportunity of cooking outdoors….just one more time.  All change with the weather yesterday, which proved to be a damp morning with a drop in temperature.  The rain was most welcome and saved us having to water the garden, which was very dry in places.

Yesterday, after our usual Mundesley shop, we continued to JD Planting, the garden centre in Roughton.  Peter needed some more broad bean seeds; the Aquadulce variety you sow in autumn and over winter to produce an early crop, late spring and into early summer.  We were also looking for the Japanese variety of onion seeds which are sown late summer into autumn.  I’ve already grown some to seedling stage but they’ve refused to get any bigger.  Those I pricked out into trays, eventually keeled over and died.  We’ve grown them before; I really don’t know what’s gone wrong this year.  They didn’t have any of this type of onion seed so I can only hope the seedlings I have left, perk up.  If they don’t, we won’t have any follow-on onions after we’ve finished this year’s main crop.  I was pleased to find they had soft fruit bushes available.  I purchased two blackcurrants which will take the place of the blueberries; these were a total disappointment fruit wise.  They had an assortment of soft fruit bushes and raspberry canes but no gooseberries, so I’ve ordered one online which will be delivered bare root in November.

Based on Andrew Sankey’s recommendations, at the Gardening Club, for plants which survive in shady dry conditions, I ordered four online.  These were delivered yesterday.  I now have six plants ready to set in the soil.  The wind today, is gusty and cold so they will remain sheltered, in their pots, ready for planting another day.

I’ve made a slight change to the format of the Village Calendar page, here on my website.  As well as providing dates of events, I’ve added images of the posters, where relevant.  I hope this makes it easier to find out more details about ‘what’s on’ in the village.  No prizes for spotting there are four events, all on the same day!

Today’s photo was taken from the cliff tops, looking out across the sea where the sun was breaking through the dark clouds, providing a striking scene.
