Sunday 25th October 2026 - Poppy Appeal, Remembrance and Armistice plus New Phone

The annual Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal commenced last Thursday (22nd). Those who are regular readers of my blog will be aware, I retired as Overstrand’s Poppy Appeal Organiser (PAO) at the end of last year’s appeal. Attempts were made to recruit my replacement by myself, The Belfry School and Norfolk’s Poppy Appeal Manager; all without success. I was informed, early September, Overstrand District has been amalgamated with Cromer District. At this point I passed on all the appeal information covering Overstrand to the PAO for Cromer. It’s a shame that Overstrand no longer has a separate identity, but with no one coming forward to take on the role of PAO, it appears joining with Cromer was the way forward.
Overstrand resident, former Belfry School Headmaster and village historian, Tim Bennett has sent me a poster with the details of the services at St Martins for both Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day. I have included the poster on Facebook as well as the Village Calendar page.
A video has been posted on YouTube covering works on the repairs to the sea wall. It demonstrates the process of removing the sand etc. in the void between the sea wall and the new piling, before cement is poured in. For the past couple of weekends, when the promenade has been open, we walked along to see the progress. There has been little to photograph that is meaningful, so this short video is a welcome record of the progress being made by the contractors.
The battery in my phone has been running low in power quickly and taking ages to re-charge. I’ve had it for some years – it was time for a replacement before the battery gave up completely. Peter has bought me a new phone; the latest version from the same manufacturer. The manual is online and with just over three hundred and seventy pages. I read the first few pages while both old and new phones were charging. I didn’t need the manual for the set up as the screen took me through it stage by stage and with both phones adjacent, all the data, apps etc. transferred over. I only lost the last few days WhatsApp messages and the tide predictor app; neither of which present a problem. Peter, has now ordered the same model of phone for himself. The camera on the phone has over twice as many megapixels than my compact camera so I am wondering whether the phone’s camera will take the place of my compact. I need to read the relevant pages in the manual to find out what it can do before I make a decision. I tried the phone’s camera out this morning, with one of the shots featuring as today’s photo. This shows the grey skies and sea with a glow on the horizon as the sun was about to rise ‘out of the sea’. What it doesn’t reveal is the feisty and gusty winds, resulting in not only leaves being blown off the trees but branches too. From what we’ve seen the branches have been small, fortunately nothing that could result in any major damage.
