Thursday 29th May 2025 - A Lot Crammed In and Bus Timetables

Our family arrived on Saturday afternoon and between then and when they left yesterday morning, we crammed a lot in.

On the food side, we ate; fish and chips (a must when visiting the coast); Sunday evening we went to The White Horse for dinner (the chicken pie I ordered was a proper pie – not filling in a dish with a piece of pastry cooked separately and plonked on top), after this three of us stayed for the quiz in the bar, we had a tagine at ours (cooked ahead and frozen), lunch at another local pub (I was not impressed with my goats cheese salad, served with the tough inedible outer leaves of oak leaf, curly endive and lollo rosso.  I should add other dishes were better, that was apart from Peter’s hard crusted pie), plus there were various other lunches and snacks (our eldest grandson was pleased Andy’s crab shop was open so he could enjoy this local delicacy).

We visited Holkham Hall, which being during half term break was very busy but given the space, didn’t feel too overcrowded.  We took a tractor ride during which we learnt about the deer in the park and Lord Leicester’s family residence.  Four did the rope course and while they were enjoying the challenges the rest of us, me included, took a stroll round part of the grounds.  Time was spent on the beach looking for items of interest and finding a variety which our grandsons took home.  Cromer was also on the cards, dipping into the record and cd fair, followed by Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, performed in the Pavilion Theatre (I am not one for musicals but this was brilliant with amazing performers, stunning stage sets and enhancing imaginative lighting).  I must not forget, taking advantage of the sports field to play ball games.  We are now back in our normal routine.

Recently, when walking on our litter picks, we have noticed Sanders have removed the printed bus timetables from the bus shelters and stops we pass, replacing these with QR codes to access bus times (although the shelter near the school now has neither).  I should add, we haven’t passed by and checked all the bus stops in the village.  In my role as Poppy Appeal Organiser for the village, I know residents don’t use QR codes.  I say this because, those on the appeal’s collecting tins have never been used to make donations.  On this basis and given, it is mainly older villagers using the buses some of who don’t use mobiles, let alone smart phones, I think this is an absolutely stupid move on behalf of Sanders.

Today’s photo was taken from a bench, where we sat, in the parkland at Holkham Hall.  In the foreground is the herd of aged stags, termed as the Gentlemen’s Club, enjoying their peaceful retirement.
