Cooler mornings have been the norm for the past couple of weeks but as the mornings have progressed, for the most part, it has warmed.  Cool mornings are a definite indication; autumn is on its way, something which has been confirmed by what we are seeing in the hedgerows.  I took photos of berries etc. on our Monday morning walk and again, today.  I will print some of the shots to use in the forthcoming winter to draw but I thought I would share a selection with you, along with some information.  There will be more to follow, in my next blog.

Old Man’s Beard
Old Man’s Beard

This plant is of the clematis family and can be seen freely scrambling in hedgerows.  It is also known as Traveller’s Joy.

Rose Hips

These in the photo are the fruits of the wild dog rose named as such due to the belief that the roots should be used if bitten by a rabid dog.  In my childhood the inside of the fruit was used as itching powder and put down the back of another child’s jumper!

Sloes
Sloes

As can been seen in this photo sloes are, thanks to a warm moist spring, in abundance this year.  We picked some this morning, not to make sloe gin with but sloe rum, using white rum which originated in the Caribbean.

Pink Winged Sycamore Seeds

To see pink tinged seeds is unusual.  When we see them, they are usually green, later turning brown.  The sycamore is a member of the Acer family and because it’s prolific, dropping extremely fertile seeds, it has been referred to as the weed tree.

Japanese Knotweed

Currently the presence of this plant on a section of the cliffs is giving the District Council, something of a headache (covered in my earlier blogs).  It’s growing, not only on the cliffs, but on private land at the back of the allotments.  However, I don’t think anyone could deny, its flower is stunning with its sprays of tiny white flowers.

Finally, this is for those who aren’t on Facebook and may not have not heard about the potential development on the old camping field on Beach Close.  The proposal is to erect twenty-two freehold pods, on the land, for permanent occupation.  No need for me to elaborate here, as full details can be found on Zoopla’s website – click here
