What do you do, when it rains and the winds blows all day, as it did yesterday? Well, I decided to tackle some tasks, the sort you save (or put off) for days like these. In the morning, I cleaned the insides of the kitchen cupboards, polished the brass and descaled the kettle. All pretty boring but with my earbuds in, with music filtering through them from my Mp3 player, the tasks didn’t feel too arduous.
Over the past few days, I've tackled some of what I term as, annual jobs. These included, putting old paperwork into storage, removing older ones and shredding them, plus generally tidying our files. I’ve been through the bookcase and pulled a few books, we no longer want or need. These have been added to our sons’ Rupert Bear annuals and taken today to the independent inshore lifeboat charity shop in Mundesley. The Ruperts came with us when we moved here (seventeen years ago!); although I’m not sure why. Since then they’ve remained in boxes in the depths of our roof storage. After retrieving them, a couple of weeks ago, I checked with our sons, just in case they or our grandsons wanted them, which they don’t. Hopefully, someone will enjoy them while also raising some funds for the lifeboat. I should add, the staff in the shop are full of smiles, very friendly and always happy to accept our donations.
We tried the membrillo (quince paste) I made, with some Manchego and local Walshingham (a sort of Wensleydale/Cheddar) cheeses. It was okay, nothing amazing, very sweet and not a lot of flavour. Having said that, it will get eaten but I don’t think I’ll be making it again.
Now for a couple of pieces of village news. Cadent are coming back to the village and this time, will be working further down Pauls Lane. No idea what they plan to do, maybe more of the same works they completed in other parts of the village. While they're here, a section of Pauls Lane, either side of Harbord Road, will be closed between 3rd and 14th November. The closure has been clearly marked, ahead of the works. The fishing boats have been brought up to winter quarters, on the Fishermen’s Green – no more crabs or lobsters now until next spring.
I took today’s photo the other week, on a grey morning, while I watched the gulls as they lined up along one of the revetments.
