Friday 11th September 2026 - In the Garden, Poles and Compound

A fairly quiet week for us.  Peter has been tending his vegetable plot, which is providing a good variety for us to eat.  He has taken down the main row of runner beans and dug out the roots.  These were larger than usual; this must reflect the summer drought with the beans searching for moisture, over and above the water Peter provided each day.  It’s early for the runners to stop producing, we’ve had years when we’ve still been picking them ino early October – another effect of the drought?

I’ve been in the garden too and completed bringing down the height of the bay tree (that chainsaw really is a whizz).  The foliage has been bagged, ready to be emptied into the brown bin, over the coming weeks and Peter will be burning the large branches, which are too big to go in the bin.  The ash will be most welcome, as a fertiliser on the vegetable plot.  Determined not to be beaten, I was delighted this morning when I succeeded with the last part, of the garden task I’ve been working on.

In the village, a number of the poles, supporting the overhead electricity cables, are being replaced.  Apparently, the poles are showing signs of rotting.  The works don’t appear to have caused any disruption to villagers’ day to day lives, with no loss of power to those directly involved. 

The contractor’s compound (see photos) has been set up, at the east end of the promenade, prior to repairs to the sea wall, commencing on Monday.  It will be interesting to see how it progresses and, working with the tides, how long it takes to complete.  Understandably, there will be some access restrictions but according to NNDC, the promenade will be open at the weekends.
